From July 12 through October 18, 2018, the LSU Museum of Art — located at the Center for the Arts in Louisiana State University — will host a spotlight exhibition showcasing the art collection of Angela Gregory, a New Orleans native and talented twentieth-century sculptor.
Born in 1903, the daughter of an engineering professor and artist, Angela Gregory developed an interest in art from an early age and decided by the age of 14 that she would grow up to become a sculptor — despite the difficulties in pursuing an artistic profession as a woman in the early 20th century.
Attending Tulane University as a teenager and graduating from Newcomb College in 1925, the artist followed her studies of design to Parson’s School of Fine Art and Applied Art in Paris. She went on to become the only American artist to study stonecutting in the atelier of the French artist Antoine Bordelle, where she completed a bust of the scholar Joseph Campbell, as well as other notable sculptures.
In addition to working as a practicing artist and sculptor, Gregory continued school at Tulane University, earning an architecture degree, taught as a professor at Newcomb College and completed multiple independent architectural commissions around Louisiana. Gregory completed several projects in Baton Rouge, including sculptures for the State Capitol, sculptural railing portions for the exterior of a building at LSU and architectural work for the Louisiana National Bank, which is now the site of the Watermark hotel.
In honor of Angela Gregory’s talent and contributions to both Baton Rouge and our building, the Watermark hotel, the Gregory will be participating in meal specials to support the LSU Museum of Art’s exhibition Collection Spotlight: Angela Gregory, which will showcase some of the artist’s best sculptures, molds and maquettes to offer insight into her process.
In honor of the restaurant’s namesake, The Gregory will be offering a variety of discounts and offerings in collaboration with the Museum from now through October.
Through October 14th, guests dining at The Gregory will receive a 10 percent discount off their food and drink orders when they show their passes to the Angela Gregory event. If you’re planning on attending the exhibition and need a good bite to eat before or after you admire Angela Gregory’s sculptures and portfolio work, come to The Gregory — located at the Watermark hotel right across the street — for a discounted, delicious meal.
On September 5th, the museum will feature discounted brown bag lunches to enjoy at the exhibit as a special promotion. Your brown bag lunch BLT special will come freshly made from Milford’s on Third, also located in the Watermark hotel. You may order for pick-up or delivery at the museum. This is a one-day special only.
On October 18th, the Gregory will be featuring a special Angela Gregory-themed cocktail on-site at the museum. Enjoy a tasting of our Golden Goose specialty cocktail from one of our best bartenders as you peruse the museum exhibit, and come to our bar or restaurant afterward for a 10 percent discount on your first drink.
Celebrate the work and life of Angela Gregory by indulging in a delicious meal at the Gregory after exploring the LSU Museum of Art exhibition, and take advantage of all our honorary specials in September and October. Browse our menus and stop in today.
